I bought a few books today. :-p First of all, I went to Allison's, and it was way too hot to go walking in Shelby Forest, unless you relish the idea of heat exhaustion or something equally unpleasant. I wanted to pick up a couple of books, notably the David Gemmell novel set during the Trojan War, and this seemed like a great way to get off of her couch, and moving (so I wouldn't fall asleep).

I got there, and I realized I hadn't been in a bookstore in a while. I picked up quite a few novels. I grabbed Widdershins by Charles de Lint, since it seems to be what I call a "modern fantasy" novel (or, simply put, a novel set in the modern day, where the fantastic happens to ordinary people). I also picked up six paperbacks, all by new people except Once Upon a Winter Night and Once Upon a Summer Day, both by Dennis McKiernan (and they seem to be retellings of classic tales -- "Winter Night" seems to retell the story of Beauty & the Beast).

We came back to her place, where she was making pot roast (MMM!!!), and we watched Disney's "The Sword and the Stone" and, later, watched "Shrek". Let me tell you. I *love* retellings of the Arthurian legend, and I was a little disappointed in "The Sword and the Stone". Oh well, can't win 'em all. After Shrek was over, Allison, her roommate, and I talked for about an hour. Fun times, except where I heard her roommate use the term "christian punk rock". You music buffs out there... can this even properly exist? I mean, it might SOUND similar to punk, but it can't be true punk. The Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Decendents, and others would be horrified. I know I am. Still, fun times were had. :)

I work Friday 6a-2p. After work, I'm going to be hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] strieson, and we're planning on seeing Clerks II. That is, of course, if he's not stil at work.

Oh, and lest I forget, we got the apartment. We'll be moving in around the 10th to the 15th. I'm looking forward to it. Time for me to decide what I need to buy for the move in. (For example, while they've worked fine here, I don't think that cinder blocks will be acceptable for my bed frame there. *wink* Heck, I *might* just get a new bed all around.)

Well, time's a-wasting, and I'm not getting any younger, nor am I getting any more rest. :-p

From EN World:

D&D 4th Edition News
  • Yes,you saw that right. I've just added a news category for D&D 4thEdition News. Why? Because today I saw my first bona fide 4E rumour, and it came, aptly enough, from Eric Noah:
On a more serious note ... it isironic that even yesterday I got some major scoops about the future ofD&D. It is sounding like some of our most paranoid fears are infact in the works.

-4E already in the works? Check.
    -Even more miniatures-centric? Check.
-Much smaller bundles of game info, packaged and sold separately? Check.
-A plan to possibly sell off RPGs entirely? Check. (Apparently only miniatures and Magic are making any money for WotC).

Unfortunately I can't go into how I got the info or who gave it to me.And I don't think even WotC knows when they're going to announceanything. I got the impression that timing such an announcement withGenCon was no longer seen as optimal or necessary. But please take allas unsubstantiated speculation ... as usual!

It's not about money. It's not about miniatures. Crap. I can understand why they'd be worried about money makers, but sheesh, to neuter 4th edition where it's not even recognizable as a D&D descendent? Sheesh.

I better hang on tight to my 3rd edition stuff now. Looks like that might be the last true version of the game. (Yes, I'm going off about "unsubstantiated speculation ", but something about this just "feels" like what they're going to do.)

To whatever cruel twist of fate that thought it'd be funny for me to wake at 3a, thinking that I had to be at work, please die. You didn't get any funnier when you decided that my subconscious would be paranoid about sleeping through the alarm, which kept me glancing at the alarm every time I started to fall asleep after I laid back down. I finally fell asleep, got some half-decent REM, and woke too soon (though it would have been a great way to begin several hours of sleep). Work's gonna be fun today. *eye roll*

And now, for something completely different...

Does anyone else find it ironic and more than a little amusing that the book version of The Neverending Story was written by a guy named Michael Ende? :)
