Here is post #2 that I halfway promised on Saturday. :)
I was supposed to raid Zul'Gurub tonight with my guild, Impact, but I dropped out at the last moment. My RL buddy in the guild,
nyminal, had already dropped to preserve "class balance" (which is important), and I've also been thinking about whether to keep my account or not lately. (See, between this eating healthy deal and working on a campaign world and game, my attention has been diverted elsewhere, and WoW is no longer a priority. Sad, since I just got into an endgame guild, and just got enough experience where I'm allowed to spend my DKP.
So, yeah... I'm working on a new campaign world/game. I was reading Dennis McKiernan's "The Eye of the Hunter" after recently finishing Mitchell Graham's The Ancient Legacy and C. J. Cherryh's Morgaine Saga (Gate of Ivrel, Well of Shiuan, and Fires of Azeroth -- which, consequently, was written 30 years ago. Any relation to Warcraft is completely coinceidental), and began to get really inspired for a new D&D game. Realistically, I should call it "Anthony OGL," since I am going to heavily modify the ruleset to account for what *I* want out of a fantasy game.
I've always liked how most fantasy fiction (the D&D campaign world based novels being an obvious exception) handles magic as a mysterious force that few people know anything about, fewer still learn to use, and even fewer learn to master. Ged in the Earthsea saga became a sorcerer because it was in his blood. Rand Al'Thor, Mat Lewin and even Luke Skywalker all
started as farmboys who just happened to discover a power within them. Morgaine, in the saga of the same name, wielded a power that frightened the other major protagonist, Vanye. Belgarion had a magical power that was simply called "The Will & the Word", because what you imagined is what you caused to be.
Simply put: I am sick to death of both the Vancian magic system of standard D&D, as well as any magic point/mana system alternate. I want to create a system that could allow anyone to dabble in it some. I want magical healing to be slightly rare, and magical resurrection to be unheard of. I want a +1 sword to be something relatively special, rather than "oh, not another one of THOSE."
( As if overhauling the magic system wasn't enough, I get longwinded, too. )
Obviously, a lot of that is simply how I run the game, rather than the game world itself. Still, my point is that dictating what's in the world and how it's done will facilitate those other elements. For example, I've thought about how to start the campaign: The PCs are all fellow villagers that grew up together. This means they're almost all certainly going to be human. It also means that none of them are going to be casters. Chances are, too, that they are not going to be worldly at all. Sweet. :)
At any rate, I am working on a map, world info, and a new magic system for the game, not to mention the approved list of classes, feats, and skills (Why use Hide & Move Silently, when you can use Sneak?).
This "eating right" thing is really working for me, too. One, since I assume I'm getting more of the nutrients I need, I'm not feeling hungry like I was. Two, getting up early enough to have breakfast is causing me to get sleepy when I should in the evening. Third, I feel better. I have more energy. And I'm not even worrying about calories or fat or carbs yet. I'm just acclimating myself to eating frutis/vegetables with every meal. (Yes, I ate horribly.) One thing that I am doing differently this time is that I am keeping healthy-ish things around to snack on, rather than saying "no snacks!" I have honey-roasted peanuts and raisins for my at-hand snacking by my computer, and light yogurt and no-sugar-added apple sauce for desserts. :)
Well.. I have more to say, but not much time to do so. This should be enough for now to keep you busy... or to convince you to remove me from your friends list. :)
