tek2way: (Sky - Andromeda)
(As I was starting this post, I chose the song you see listed for my "currently playing" entry. I decided that, since I liked this song so much, that I would look up the lyrics online. Would you believe that this song is based off the old Playstation video game, Medievil?! It even mentions Sir Daniel Fortesque in the first verse. The chorus goes

"My name is Zarok the sorcerer
I just want to take back what's mine
lead my militia to overthrow this realm
you have intruded on sacred ground
you are blind to all it posesses
unaware of the magic it beholds

I think this is wicked cool. I liked this game, and really enjoyed playing it. Also, to my knowledge, this is the first song I've ever heard that is based off of a video game. I mean, we've seen stuff for movies and books, but video games?!? Who'd have thought it?!)

---

Yesterday, I knew I'd have a busy day at work. Our Guest Care clerk, who was scheduled to work from 2p-8p, had a medical emergency, and couldn't work. (She's fine, though.) As a way of handling the issue, we had the morning clerk come in at 1pm, while I just skipped my lunch, and ran Guest Care until 1pm. (I'd then have time to do my sweep to collect drops from the checkers, as well as doing my end of shift count in Acounting.

So, the day started pretty much as I expected, and things went well. I was done in Accounting on time, so I went up to Guest Care to work. It was pretty busy, mainly because we just passed the middle of the month, so folks were paying their middle-of-the-month bills. I didn't worry about it, though, because it kept me occupied. My CSM was off, watching her two grandchildren, but she had finished the schedule the day before, so I just had to wait for management to tell me to post it when they give me the copies.

The morning went alright, even though we didn't have enough people to cover breaks. Fortunately, no one was concerned about getting them, since we were pretty slow on the floor anyway. (The two who were out there worked until noon, when their relef showed up.) However, a snag was finally hit: The co-manager called me, asking where the schedule was, and if it would be done by noon (which is when it has to be posted, per our union contract). I told him that my CSM had finished it the day before, and that it was in the computer, waiting to be printed. He told me that the ASP (administrative assistant, basically, though I have no clue what that stands for) didn't see it. He called her while I was on the intercom with him, and had her explain.

Apparently, she said that she went in to print the schedules, and was surprised and concerned when the front end had nothing scheduled. They doublechecked it, and it was for the new schedule that we were missing the schedule. Now, we were only missing the front end's schedule. No other one was missing, be it produce, grocery, meat or another. In fact, she said that she was able to re-key in the File Clerks (who are listed on our schedule).

I should explain really quick about how the schedule is done. We have an application (SKED)  that we do the scheduling with, and each classification (such as checker, bagger, accounting, etc) is a different "card", with different departments being located on different screens.  The only way for the schedule to be erased is for someone to decide to hit "Create New Schedule" and THEN choose to copy long-term availability for either the current card, or all cards (for that department). This rang little warning bells in my mind, because I knew someone had to have done it on purpose. I began to REALLY suspect the ASP, when I thought of something that my CSM had told me the day before.

The CSM had to change the schedule a little bit, after finding out that she had to work as Manager in Charge a couple of nights next week. The ASP was in SKED at the time, so the CSM asked her if she could change a couple of things. When the CSM told her to go into the "Accounting" card, the ASP said, "I know what classification you are." My CSM snapped back, "..but you don't know what I have to change." According to my CSM, the ASP is getting quite an ego from working for the manager, and has begun to look down upon everyone else in the store, even department heads. This incident was an indication of that. This really annoys me, since her job isn't even one that can get benefits or holiday pay. But it's a minor gripe for me.

There I am, sitting on the intercom, and I just knew that the ASP had deleted the schedule to "get back" at my CSM. I could be completely wrong, but I just don't think so.

So, the co-manager comes down to relieve me from Guest Care, so that I can go upstairs and talk to my CSM on the phone, and attempt to recreate the schedule before 2pm, when the schedule is supposed to be sent to our time clock. I got up there, and, over the course of the next two hours, was able to piecemeal the schedule back together. While we were talking about HOW the schedule got erased, my CSM told me that the ASP felt superior (read: smarter) to everyone in the store, including me. This inflamed me rather fiercely, since that is the one thing I'm most sensitive about. I may not be the most polished, good looking, social individual in the world, but I am proud of my mind. The fact that I could do her job, and never taken a computer course for MS Office or computers (aside from a required course when I was going to a community college back in 1996), emphasized how little she could lord it over people.

Well, I know it's irrational, and that I've not seen evidence for myself per se (I have felt patronized by her on a couple of occasions), but I was pissed about it. Oh, not vocally pissed. I just mulled over that, and simmered lowly. :) On the surface, I was stressed enough about the schedule that I didn't have time to worry about that, and this showed by the very bad case of the giggles I got when we were getting close to finishing it up. We were working, but I couldn't help laughing. It helped my stress level a lot.

Once, around 2pm, I was laughing on the phone with my CSM, finalizing the baggers (who were last on the list to rebuild), when I felt someone behind me. There, standing there with (what seemed at the time) a self-satisfied smile on her face, was the ASP. "Are you just about done?" she asked.

I hope my eye didn't twitch, because I replied (thinking of how the schedule had been purposefully removed by someone), "I'll be done when I'm done."

"Oh, well, I'm about to leave..."

"I'll upload it to Kronos. Don't worry about it," I siad, as I turned back around to the computer.

What the hell is her deal? Who does she think was doing this stuff before she showed up?! ME! That's who. I just couldn't keep doing it, because the ASP is non-union, non-benefits help, and since I'm union and have full benefits, corporate and management (zone management... my store manager woulda wanted to keep me instead) decided that it was a conflict of interest and contracts. I've been at this job for nearly 11 years, and I've retained a considerable amount of what I've learned. Hell, that's how I got the Time & Attendance job. I watfched the TAA clerk at my old store fix errors, and I never forgot how he did it. Now, a year into our new TAA system, Kronos, I am back to the level of proficiency with it that I was with the old system. I may not have the degrees, but I have the intelligence and the knowledge and the reasoning to handle most of the basic technical jobs. Desktop applications are a cakewalk for me. Well, anyway..

I finshed the schedule, posted it, and left. I came home, made my dinner (since I didn't get a lunch, I was hungry; I made a beef & gravy rice dish thing*), and sat down to work on my home computer. I had to think about the game that I was tentatively going to play today, and make the necessary preparations for it. [livejournal.com profile] strieson called once, and sounded out of sorts, but he wouldn't talk to me about it (he just wanted Charles' cell phone number). I called Charles, and found that he wasn't sure that they'd be at home for it, so I began to just goof off. [livejournal.com profile] strieson called back, and I gave him Charles' number. While we were talking then, I was reminded about the "wedding" on WoW's Thunderlord realm that I was supposed to go to.

Before anyone thinks that it's weird to do this (I know I find it odd, but not in this case), the two people in question are actually a couple, and are actually engaged to be married in real life. Basically, for them it was another way to have fun in a fun game. I signed on, and had a blast. We went fishing for Deviate Fish in Wailing Caverns, and had the ceremony on Fray Island. It was a hoot, too. Afterward, with most of the group drunk, we went raiding Astranaar. Hehehe.. I've always wanted to do that. It went well, until someone started killing civilians, and getting us Dishonorable Kills. We broke it off, and called it a night.

I hung around online for awhile, checking out items in the auction house, and using the "dressing room" feature to assemble a better-looking suit of armor. :) Finally, when I couldn't stay awake any longer, I logged out. I didn't go to sleep immediately, though. Heh, that would have been intelligent. No, I sat up for about an hour more, working on the document I'm going to pass out to my players on the first session. When I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer, I went to bed, and slept very well.

Today, I plan to get a lot of prep work done for the game and to also rerip my CD collection for iTunes, since I really effed it up earlier this week. Speaking of which, it's time to get started...

* - Cook the rice. Brown the ground beef. Heat the gravy. Mix it together and, at your option, top with parmesan cheese. Mmm. Mmm. Good. :)
