tek2way: (Star Wars - Anakin Vader)
April 2 technically began at midnight. As such, that meant there were a plethora of places that were offering the new Star Wars figures at midnight.

So, around 1030pm, I found myself over at [livejournal.com profile] andric's place. We were going to go to Wal-mart for its midnight release. I decided that I wasn't insane enough to go to Toys R Us. (While I love Toys R Us as a toy store, the fact that it was opening JUST for the Star Wars stuff meant that people would be lined up, would all go right for the same stuff, and I had no desire to repeat that experience*.

We went to Starbucks, because she had been up forever (at the hospital, expecting a 2nd cousin all day) and because it was a good way to pass the time until midnight. I can't say what I was thinking we were going to do until midnight, but suffice it to say that Starbucks was an awesome idea**.

Around 1140p, we left, and headed to Wal-mart, which was around the corner. There were a few people, but not too many, so I was relieved. I knew I'd get all that I wanted here.

While waiting, I saw them dump figures into a basket. I saw Aayla Secura and Luminara Unduli. They were four, maybe five, feet from my hands. Yet, it wasn't midnight. I'd have to wait.

I'm still waiting. As soon as we were allowed to start pulling stuff, I dove into the figures, and couldn't find them. I grabbed a bunch of cool stuff, but almost all of what I did get they had lots of. Aayla Secura and Luminara Unduli were both of the "one per case" variety***. Lovely. I bought a bunch of figures, though, and had a good time over all. I got:
  • General Grievous (four-armed version)
  • Darth Vader
  • Anakin Skywalker (tunic only)
  • Mon Mothma
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi (clean tunic)
  • Shaak Ti
  • Bail Organa
I also grabbed a Mace Windu for [livejournal.com profile] makeshift_guru, since that is the only figure I could talk him into telling me he liked. Finally, I procured both the Unleashed Anakin Skywalker, and the Unleashed Obi-Wan Kenobi. They are designed in such a way that they make a single scene. I have it on top of my monitor, and I think it looks spiffy.

After about 25 minutes, I realize I had been going through the same boxes over and over, in the vain hope of finding one of those two Jedi. No luck. That's when I noticed this guy with a basket, looking through figures. That's when I noticed his cart was rather full, given that only 32 total figures have been released. That's when I noticed that he had multiples of the Padme figure, and realized that he was buying multiples of others. To keep from assaulting him and taking the two I needed from him****, I left with what I did have. I felt the Dark Side there, beckoning, but I was able to resist.....this time.

I came home, opened them all up, and stood them around my desk. I like 'em there. Some of the figures cannot stand on their own, which has always been a complaint of mine since the relaunch in 1995. Still, I suppose I'll just go get some figure stands from Comic Cellar later, if it comes down to it. (And the basic figures DO have stands with them. It's only the ones that have a special attack (squeeze legs and sword swings) that don't. Frankly, keep your stupid "kung-fu grip" moves, and gimme stands.

Anyway, I'm going to be hanging out with Charles and Melissa today, but not until around 230-300pm. To spend time until then, I'm going to go looking for my two missing Jedi, possibly branching out and getting Agen Kolar, Kit Fisto, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Saesee Tiin, and Mace Windu (all Jedi Council members). Hmm.. but there's also Palpatine, Artoo, Threepio, and Padme. *shrug* I'm just gonna browse around, and have fun doing so. If something catches my eye, so be it.

* - In 1999, for the release of the Episode I figures, I went to Toys R Us. It was like those day-after-Thanksgiving sales, where people were running to the display, and I just hated the feeling.

** - Frankly, I think I had some mental picture of going to Wal-Mart, and standing in line there. Talk about retarded, given that that's why I didn't go to Toys R Us.

*** - That's total fucking bullshit, too. Why is Tarrful, a bit Wookiee character, more plentiful than two Jedi, especially two popular Jedi? Bull shit.

**** - Let's face it. He was buying them to sell on eBay. *I* wanted figures because I love the movies, not because I wanted to make a quick buck. Hell, ALL of my figures have been opened, and are standing honor guard around my monitor.

I was browsing some sites earlier, and learned that the two I wanted are turning into the hardest to find figures of all. Strangely, a couple of the others that I saw lots of are also considered "limited in quantity". That's when I saw that Wal-Mart is selling their exclusive and figures online. So, I ordered the exclusive, as well as Luminara Unduli. Sadly, Aayla Secura is already out of stock on their site. *sighs* I guess that means I need to get up and go to Toys R Us and Wal-Mart. I have to get one of her. Oh! I'll check ToysRUs.com first.

EDIT: Okay, ToysRUs.com had it. I ordered a bunch of figures from there, and my Star Wars purchasing is done. At least until May 3, when the soundtrack is released.

Alright, people, the time jumps (leaps/springs) forward one hour tonight at 2am. Remember what this means, folks:

You're getting an hour of your life ripped away, and you won't get it back until right before Halloween.

*mutters* Stupid effing DST.
