Okay.. So I really didn't want to go to work today, because I didn't want to find out what my fate was. Fortunately, I learned right away that I wasn't in danger of losing my job. I just misunderstood that part of the e-mail. I *was* still in danger of being transferred, though. At first, I thought it'd be nice, but then I realized that I might wind up nothing more than a 40 hour checker. I don't want that. I like the freedom that being backup gives me, along with the challenges that I have to face daily as a result. Yeah, I claim to hate my job, but it's far preferable to the alternative.
So, I handled things okay today. I had put Terry Pratchett's The Colour of Magic on my iPod, so I had that today at lunch instead of reading a book. Hehehe.. I *like* audiobooks. That was a ton of fun. I was able to read, but still focus on the food in front of me, so I didn't rush my meal, or make a mess, or anything else.
Coming back early from lunch so that I could sit upstairs for a bit before I clocked back in, I was snagged by the manager, who, along with the co-manager and CSM, was having trouble finding a computer in the computer room. (Sounds funny when I put it that way, but I'm referring to finding a specific computer, coupled with bad directions from the phone tech support.) Naturally, I found it, and we figured out that it was dead, and thus, so was our payroll check cashing ability. No skin off my teeth, let me tell you. :)
I enjoyed that. I realized that I had to acknowledge the distinct possibility that I wouldn't get to do anything like that for a long time, if ever. I heard I might have to finish fixing the schedule on Friday, and decided something right then: If I *was* getting transferred, then I was just going to refuse to do the schedule, and take the write-up over it instead. I see no reason to put myself through that kind of stress, especially if I'm not going to be there.
I came home, and messed around on my computer, watching the last bit of "End of Innocence", the Nightwish documentary. I learned that, had Emmpu had his way, I wouldn't know who Nightwish were. Let me explain. My buddy Rick -- back in the day -- had a character he named "Moondance". The name has stuck with me all these years. Back in the heyday of Napster, I found an mp3 on someone's collection called Moondance, by some band named "Nightwish". I downloaded it, and liked it a lot. I bought the first album, and the rest is history. If not for that one song, I might never have known about them to give them a chance. Crazy, huh?
Well, when I finished the movie, I got a phone call from Joyce. She informed me that I was officially safe, even as the unioin sees it. I am technically the shop steward for the union at the store. They won't force out their shop steward, so I'm safe. That's a relief, let me tell you. There is no one really qualified for the jobs I do in the store. Without tooting my own horn, no one could pull off what I squeeze into 40 hours. Now, at least people will quit coming up to me and asking if Friday is my last day. (Hehehe.. I should say yes, since it technically is......before my vacation, that is. :))
I found out that procedures will chancge slightly when I get back from vacation. There will not be a 6am shift for accounting. The morning accounting person will come in at 8am to open Guest Care. The close will be handled by the night accounting person. That'll be interesting to see how it is handled.
Later, folks. I've got my Eberron game to think about. Well, tomorrow. :)
