Yesterday at work was not fun, in the slightest. Oh, I've had worse days, but yesterday was not fun at all. I had to run Guest Care from when I finished closing at 8am until noon. Well, I wasn't done at 8am, because of a variety of little things that weren't my fault. (The one thing that technically was - placing the weekend's change order - was more important than finishing by 8am.) I got started with my day, and the three full timers (the checker Dana, the U-Scan clerk Glen, and me) worked out how we would do our lunches today, so they would not overlap and be gotten in a timely manner.
That went awry at 10am, when we didn't hear from the next checker due in. We started backing up, and barely made it. I was going to call her, but the manager said not to, that she no longer worked for us. (He changed his mind later, but only barely. She has no hours next week, and has to talk to him if she wants to continue working there.) She called around 1020am, and promised to be there at 1030am. When I left at 230pm, after only a half-hour lunch, she still had not shown. And she was scheduled until 5pm.
I left, and swung by Comic Cellar. Happily, they had minis from the Archfiends set in. I wound up buying 8 packs. I got some near stuff, too, like the Vrock, the Aspect of Demogorgon, a Stone Giant, and an Aspect of Bane. I also got both a githyanki and a githzerai, which should come in handy for a module I have in mind for later on in the Silver Marches campaign I'm planning. *evil grin* I also picked up volumes two, three, and four of Viz's English translation of Hana Yori Dango. Yeah, it's shojo, but I blame
mariavu for getting me hooked on the story. :)
I came home, sorted my minis, and played some Unreal Tournament 2004, until it was time to go to Charles' for the "rolling up characters" session of our soon-to-be regular Friday night game. I got there, and was asked by Melissa, Charles' wife, if I remembered the DVD from their wedding. Suddenly, I felt bad. I felt horrible. I couldn't believe I left it at home. I also began to wonder if Melissa really liked me, or if she was being nice because Charles is such a good friend.
( Wherein my mood nearly ruins everything... )
During dinner and shortly afterward, we watched two episodes of Charmed that they had recorded on TiVo. Both were good, and I've realized two things: Charmed is a show I'd take time to watch, if I had a TV, and Holly Marie Combs is beautiful in a very comfortable way. While Alyssa Milano may be gorgeous, Holly exudes a beauty that seems more natural. But I'm obsessing again. :)
After Charmed ended, Charles talked me into finishing that adventure that he started on Sunday. I started slow, since I was on-the-fly, but I had everyone's attention, and was back in my element, by the end. To clarify it, midway through the beginning, Melissa said that she couldn't do it, because she had no imagination. I just sat there quietly, while Charles talked to her. No dice. Finally, Charles said he wanted to finish the game. I agreed, even if it would be only him doing so. Well, Melissa began to try again, and seemed frustrated by her lack of memory from the other night. I explained that the DM is there to remind players of things that they may forget, but that the characters would remember.
They began again, and got through the adventure, fighting a half-risen avatar of a dead dark deity, while wielding the power of a good god. By the end, Melissa was paying close attention, and seemed excited about how the game ended. Charles was even impressed, because I tied all the elements from his beginning together. It was a much-needed ego boost for me, and it helped Melissa decide to give it a full go.
We worked on characters, and I was careful to go through everything, and explain it slowly and fully. She grasped it pretty quickly, even when I thought I fumbled it a bit. We wound up creating her a female elven ranger, and by the time we were done, it was 3am. She seemed genuinely glad that I had helped her, and I was glad that I could help.
Aron and I came home, and I wound up staying awake, playing a little more UT2004, until 5am. All in all, it was a fun day. I am going to dinner with them tonight, too. It should be fun.
