No, really. Friday was a bunch of fun. I posted about
wicked_wish, and her latest problem with her publisher. In case you didn't notice yesterday, you might want to buy her book, while you can.
I also posted in
darvin_evenwood a response to what
nyminal posted about in his journal. He was talking about how we never stick with a game, and can not seem to break the "8th level barrier", as one of our sometimes-players put it. He's right, though. I know only one character who ever made it past 9th level in a campaign, and they were burned out by the time that they got there. Anyway...
I went to the lottery training session. It looks like the on-line game is going to be easy, cheap, and better than the scratch off games, but that's on my side of things. It may take some time to figure out how the on-line games work if you don't have anyone to tell you.
I came home, and Brad called when he got off work. He wanted to hang out. I called Scott, to see if he wanted to hang out, too, but Scott had plans. So, I loaded a bunch of random stuff* into my car, and went over to Brad's. When I got there, he asked if I was opposed to Chinese with Rodney and Jill. I said that I wasn't opposed to it, but I only had experience with buffets before. We apparently were going to a place where you ordered from a menu. Uh oh.
I got the sweet and sour chicken. It was good. They got a dinner that included a bunch of stuff. I don't know about all that, though the Szechuan style beef didn't look too bad. I've decided that I'm not going to do sit-down style at a Chinese restaurant again. I don't know names of the foods. I just pick 'em out on the buffet. :)
Rodney, Brad, and I came back to Brad's apartment, and talked for a bit about various things, including the games. Then, out of the various things I brought, it was decided that they would make gestalt characters** using the variant from Unearthed Arcana., and run a module in the Dungeon magazine issue I brought***.
We played, and it was a LOT of fun. Rodney played a 17th level Gestalt Elven Paladin/Monk (think: abiliites of both Pal17 and Mnk17) named Lord Mercurius, and Brad played a 17th level Gestalt Half-Orc Barbarian/Fighter named Suzy. I should point out that Suzy is a guy. This had us cracking up all night. :) One of the oddest things about the adventure was the way there were troll fighters everywhere, and they all were hanging out with creatures of the Fire subtype (Nightmares, Fire Giants). Seems a little dangerous for someone whose only lasting damage would come from fire, huh?
We didn't finish the adventure, but we didn't break until 4am. We definitely learned that gestalt characters are to be used VERY CAREFULLY. You shouldn't use them if your group is going to have four or more players. I might even say three if they're getting a boost from somewhere else. Several times, Brad and Rodney were able to take out big hitters with only a couple of hits. Case in point: They once had to face down an 8th-level Half-Fiend/Half-Minotaur Fighter. It had 120 hit points. It got one attack at them. Brad killed it in TWO hits. Of course, that's thanks in no small part to power attack, but he still did it.
I came home, and finally managed to crash around 530am. I'm only up now so that I can update, and let my room cool off. I was dumb enough to turn the heater up a little when I went to bed, and woke up in a room that was 80 degrees. I'm going back to bed now, because Charles' bachelor party is tonight, and I'm going to need rest if I am to go. (Though, if my throat and chest still feel like this when I get up later, I may have to skip out. :( )
* - I took Settlers of Catan, my D&D skirmish miniatures, Grimm by FFG, Unearthed Arcana, one issue of Dungeon and the core d20 books.
** - A gestalt character is designed for when you want the power level REALLY high, or if the party is so small (1-3) that they're missing one of the major archetypes. You pick two classes, take the best of HD, BAB, Fort save, Ref save, Will save, and skill points between the two, and then ALL class features of both.
*** - -For the record, I brought issue #96, and ran Demonblade, an adventure for 16th level characters.
