Today.. hoo-boy, today. What can I say? Oh yeah, it was
CRAP!!!
Seriously, I didn't lose my temper, or get a headache, or any of the usual "bad day" things that happen to me. However, today stank. I was late.* The morning checker was running a little late. I got called out over a check. It turns out that the check had been made out to another business, and the customer thought that she could just write over the other business, and we could take it. When we explained why not, she went home to get some money.
Meanwhile, some one came in, looking for one of the Cricket phones that we sell. I realized we had one, and we sold it to this person. However, their credit card wouldn't work, their debit card wouldn't work, and - SURPRISE! - their check wasn't accepted. They said they'd be back. They eventually came back. The check was good, so we let it go. I have a bad feeling, though...
The first woman came back. The check she presented this time, with her Tennessee driver's license, was a check drawn on Wells Fargo back in Nevada, with a Nevada address on it. When I told her we couldn't take the check, she had a fit. I just explained why we couldn't take it.** As I expected, she started in on the "I use these here all the time" excuses. What caught me offguard was her pronouncement that she was a Shelby County "citizen", and she had a "right" to use her checks. *SNORT* That was a good one. She finally left, after we refunded the total of the part of her order that was being paid with her EBT card back to her EBT card.
I had to type up a handout on how to properly use coupons. Not a big deal. I got it done fairly quickly. However, while I was up there, I got a call on the intercom from the checker. It seems that the lady with the bad check wanted her groceries after all. She wanted to know if she had to re-ring the order. I tried to explain that since we refunded the order (it was originally cashed out, since the customer was coming back), we just had to punch that total back on the register, and it'd balance out in the wash. She couldn't figure this out***. She re-rang the order. Oh well.
I went to lunch, and read my George R. R. Martin book in the back. I got paged no less than 5 times. I hate not being able to sit in the deli and read on my lunch. The break room is dirty, and outdoors is humid and hot already. However, we were told that we couldn't use the deli for breaks (or lunches if we don't buy food there) because it is disruptive. Get a grip. I read a book, and minded my own business. One of the deli clerks today said that business has gone down since that proclamation came from the managers.
After lunch, I was expected to cut 30 hours off of an already short schedule. I tried figuring out how things went, and got called down to Guest Care because they needed money to cash checks. Then, I had to let out a break, so I began to check. And I checked for nearly an hour. I wish my breaks were that long. If I tried that, I'd lose my job. I really despise that.
While checking, I managed to break open a can of Dr. Pepper while it was still in the 12 pack. I had a bank teller inform me that the box was leaking on the floor. I managed to offend a woman paying with EBT food. (I wasn't trying. Apparently, everything I said sounded condescending. She didn't complain, though. Phew!) Not 30 minutes later, though, I managed to assume a woman buying infant formula was getting it on WIC (Tennessee's welfare program). Fortunately, I think I smoothed things over before they had a chance to start.
I was getting ready to go, and the new postage stamp order came in. I stopped, and took the time off the clock to be sure they were received right. Add to this a paycheck discrepancy, another person saying he didn't owe us money on a pay advance, and a pharmacist trying to get in touch with me so she'll get paid.
Boy, was I glad to get out of there today. :)
* - I swear, once I get back from vacation, this "late" thing is going to be part of the past. I'm getting tired of it, for my own sake.
** - I'd point out that I didn't want to take a check from her anyway. She checked her "primary" account before she left, and showed the checker what she had. "See? I've got money. I have over $700 in my account." "Uhh, that's a NEGATIVE number, ma'am."
*** - And we're putting her back in Accounting, beginning next week. Sheesh.
