As promised, here's my update about Tuesday.
Tuesday effectively begins on Monday night. After I got back from Rick's, my mom told me that Kroger had called. Since Joyce was back, I didn't have to worry about being dumped with a load of crap. So why on earth would they be calling me? Calling them back, I discovered that something had messed up during the day, and not only were the sales not reporting, but checkers were not showing up in the computer, even when they had worked an entire shift! In other words, we had lots of money that the computer didn't know what to do with, or how to account for. Tom informed me that he was on the phone with Support, and that they expected to get it fixed that night. I told him to still check with them about the Store Close, which I was going to be running when I got to work Tuesday morning. I told him to leave me a note on the whiteboard in the back.
Morning came, and even though I knew I had probably hustle, I didn't get there until 5 minutes after. Unlike normal, though, I set right to work. First things first, I called Support back, so I could run my Close. (That's what the note on the board said.) Or rather, I called them back after I spent 10-15 unproductive minutes looking for the number. Sadly, it was because I was looking for a number labelled as "ICM", when I actually just needed "Kroger Support". (They are effectively one in the same, at least as far as it matters.) I got someone, and was put on hold. After another 20 minutes spent on hold, I was told that everything looked okay, and that I should (!) be able to run my store close.
So, I punched the Store Close. Immediately, it began to do its normal thing. Until it got to the point where it copies the previous day's transaction logs. Normally, I don't even notice that item as it shoots by in the list of things it does. On this Tuesday morning, however, it showed me that it had copied 1 record. Then, it showed 11. Then 21.. 121.. 511.. 771.. 1001.. 1221.. 1591.. 1901 records copied! The tech came back, and told me that it WAS running the End of Day, but that it was going slow. ("No kidding!" I thought.)
I tried to get started, but the sales for the previous day wouldn't update. Not feeling like beginning a pan yet, I snagged a newspaper, and read it while I ate breakfast. (I had not eaten yet, since I wanted to "get right to work".) By the time the sales report had run, it was 630a.
Finally, at 1000a, I finished all the pans, counted the office, and finalized my Store Close. It was at this point that I went to lunch. I read a considerable bit of The Way Between the Worlds, by Ian Irvine. This one is obviously heading toward the climax, and as a result, it's GOOD reading. :)
I came back from lunch, did a few odd jobs that needed to be done, and came home. This was when one other notable event occurred.
Earlier, Joyce (My CSM) had mentioned that her computer was dead, and that she had ordered another one from Dell. "Hey," I thought,"I could get Aron a Dell, and since he'd have a computer, he'd leave me alone." I came home, checked out Dell.com, and assembled a decently-priced, moderately powerful system. (2.53GHz P4, 256MB RAM, 60 GB HDD, 64MB Video card, Soundblaster Live! 5.1 sound card). I asked Aron what he thought of the idea, and he was game. I submitted my credit application, totally assuming that my repossession in September would kill me. NOPE! :) I got it. What this means, is that Aron's got a computer, and I owe someone considerably less, though I have to pay it back at the rate of $41 a month. (I'm going to pay more, though, and get that paid down. I don't want a computer loan for that long.)
This also means that Aron and I can now play: Unreal Tournament and Diablo II in cooperative mode. Or versus. Whichever is more fun. :) He can also leave my computer alone now. Woot! (Oh yeah, and I'm gonna pester him until he gets a LiveJournal, too.)
Now, on to Wednesday... (Cont'd)
