So I just finished Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows again. This time, I was listening to the unabridged audiobook for most of it (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] a1057soul!!!), for a different point of view (so to speak). I enjoyed it as much this time as I did last time (which I didn't post about, I think, because I was still addicted to WoW). JKR wrote a phenomenal tale. It does what only two other series have for me. When it's over, I'm saddened by the loss of being wrenched out of that world, back to my mundane existence of bills, cars, jobs, and dirty laundry.

The only other series to affect me this profoundly are The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, and The Belgariad/Mallorean by David Eddings (just the original 10). The pain is almost physical when I finish these stories. The characters within are friends and family that I miss as soon as I realize I have to return to my world. Naturally, I'm rather short-tempered and somber for a while afterward. (At one time, I'm sure that the Wheel of Time and Dragonlance's Chronicles affected me similiarly, but Lewis & Eddings -- and now JKR -- managed to make the stories stand the test of time in my mind better.)

Would I like to see more Harry Potter stories? Yes and no. Sure, I'd love to know what happened to him after his defeat of Voldemort and before the epilogue, but I also know that if someone attempted to write those stories -- even JKR -- they'd fail in some way to address what's stirring in my heart as to what I believe happened, even if I don't consciously think about it. So, I have to reconcile myself with the seven book series, and know that things turned out alright. (Though I think the movie's ending should probably work out just a WEE bit differently, if only to fully utilize the benefit of being in a visual medium.)

Now, I'm without a book to read again. Perhaps I'll go get the second volume in Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series, since The Golden Compass was so good. Or, perhaps, I'll seek the comfort of visiting some other "friends", though I did reread Eddings' series at the beginning of the year. I have a lot of friends to visit, though. You folks have seen my bookshelves. :)
