First of all, Labor Day was quite fun. I picked up Scott, and we spent the afternoon hanging out with Charles and Melissa. We cooked hamburgers, hot dogs, and drank margaritas (have I ever said how much I love that Mexican woman? Jimmy Buffett was right, though.). After dinner, we watched Constantine. Great movie, though it's no Sin City. :) I really did like it, and felt that there were layers (aside from Keanu's acting) that would reveal themselves only with repeated viewings. I think that I might just put that on my wish list of things to get.
Going home, I talked to Scott about a variety of things related to my new D&D campaign idea, set in Dragonlance. Over the course of the conversation, I came to the conclusion that I'm going to -- at the very least -- use the Skill Groups and Feat Masteries from Iron Heroes by Mike
mearls. Later, I came to the conclusion that I might actually take fighter out altogether, and fit in some of the classes from Iron Heroes instead. To balance things somewhat, all classes would use the Iron Heroes scale for feats, rather than standard D&D. I also like how hit points were managed, with each class getting a set amount that appears to be just over half of their core D&D counterpart, to which is added a 1d4 roll.
EDIT: I also think that, since I will probably only have 3 players, I will use the Iron Heroes feat progression, which resembles the Core D&D Fighter Bonus Feat progression.
These changes will take work, but I think that it will be more rewarding in the long run. (I have been really jonesing to run an Iron Heroes game, or a Mage: The Awakening game ever since I picked those two books up. Using some of Iron Heroes should let me focus on Dragonlance, and the campaign that goes with it.
I invited
lordreaibn to play, to which he said that he'd think about it. I said that I'd post a list of what I'd decided for the campaign thus far, to enable him to make a more informed opinion.
(Keep in mind that I want to preserve the Dragonlance flavor as much as possible, so the restrictions imposed are merely to replicate the original setting's style.)
( Races )
( Classes )
( Prestige Classes )
( Feats )
The game will be set during the Age of Mortals, after the War of Souls. I will be running Key of Destiny, followed by Spectre of Sorrows and the final volume in the "Age of Mortals" campaign. Any of the guidelines above *can* be overridden, provided the player has a plausible explanation regarding the race/class/prestige class/feat.
Now, I must sleep. :)
