There isn't much to update today. In brief..
I watched the Sin City movie for the first time last night. My loathing of seeing movies in theatres has finally bit me on the ass, but good. This was a fantastic movie, and stayed true to Frank Miller's vision (or at least what *I* believe to be his vision) for a movie based on his series. I have always been a fan of the comics, and this movie delivered on so many levels. I think it shows just how much I loved the movie, when I actually watched the "extras" (well, the one) on the disc, since I rarely bother with anything other than deleted scenes. "The Making of" vignette was fabulous, and I was amazed and thrilled to see all those stars really seemed to enjoy working on the movie.
Today, I woke up, slightly groggy for some reason. I cleaned my room up a bit, showered, and did a bit of grocery shopping. Coming home, I played a little World of Warcraft, until I decided I didn't really feel like it. Instead, I watched the movie again. It was as good the second time around. I tell you, this is a gem of a movie. There are many movies that I claim to love, that this beats, hands down. (Yes, I believe this includes every Star Wars prequel, and possibly Fellowship of the Ring.)
I liked everyone's part in it. No actor didn't fit the role in which they were cast. Despite the fact that Jessica Alba's character went topless in the books, I liked her portrayal quite a bit. Bruce Willis as Hartigan was a no-brainer, since Willis really shines as an action star (Diehard I and III, anyone?). The one who really caught my eye, though, was Rosario Dawson, who played Gail. There was something in the way she portrayed that character that had me shivering, and not from fear. She was HAWT.
Over all, I would give the movie a 9 out of 10 stars, mainly because I don't wanna knee-jerk a 10, and decide later I'm wrong. It was that good. At least in my opinion, it was.
After the second viewing, I dug out my old Sin City comics (I have "A Dame to Kill For" and "The Big Fat Kill" serialized in comic form. The Big Fat Kill was done in the movie, involving the cop, the hookers, and the murderer with a new face.), and read them all again. Predictabiy, I went looking for what else has been done with the Sin City line. I regret that I learned that I've missed out on a ton of stories from the City Without Pity. Ah, well, something to get later on.
Also predictably, I made an icon to go with my revived fandom. To break it down, frame by frame, since it's 100x100, you see:
I'm rather proud of it. Now, time to go to bed. I work 5a-1p tomorrow, though we have no game tomorrow, and I'm off Monday and Tuesday, so I have a chance to get more rest.
Well, so much for brief.. :)

Marv (the violent mug trying to keep a promise to a dead friend)
the hookers (Wendy, Gail, and Goldie)
Nancy (the exotic dancer played by Jessica Alba)
Dwight (the aforementioned killer with a new face)
the logo, complete with Frank's name still above it. |
