So, I decided last week that - no matter how cool it looked initially - I don't want to run a Midnight game. It just isn't worth it. The dark god has won. It's just a matter of time before he razes the elven homeland. Everyone is starving. It hasn't rained in years. Money has no value. Weapons and armor are banned. And the one thing I wanted to modify (making the dark god defeatable, if not necessarily weak) is the source of some debate on both Against The Shadow's message boards and the Yahoo! group.
Apparently, there are those who say that it is a "fact" that if you change certain things, such as the dark god's state of being "undefeatable", you are NOT playing Midnight. How is that a fact? Dumbasses, the lot of them.
The only way I would even REMOTELY want to run (or, truth to tell, play) Midnight is if the chance of victory is there. My life is hopeless and depressing enough without playing a "game" where such is the case as well. I mean, the concept is awesome. (Effectively, "What if Sauron had won the War of the Rings?") Who wouldn't want to try to defeat such a powerful enemy? There is something noble and heroic about that, that just wouldn't be there if it was known, going into it, that the dark god couldn't be beaten.
So, I have said it before, but I'm reiterating, since I've done some investigation on the subject of hopelessness. If coming from behind and defeating the dark god isn't a feasible option, and if making that option viable harms the settings flavor so badly, then I will never run it. I have everything released for Midnight so far, minus the City of Shadows book that just came out. If anyone is interested, make me an offer.
I'm feeling dirty now.. I'm going to see what can get rid of this feeling...
