I was cruising alt.movies.the-matrix for fun, when I stumbled on this post. It translates the line of French that was spoken in the Matrix. You know, the line that was followed by the comment about silk. :) Since it's swearing, I'm hiding it behind a cut tag. (Because it's BAAAAD swearing.) You have been warned.

There have been requests to translate the Merovingian's French. I offer this
warning: it might not be pretty, but then again, the movies are rated R. :-)
This is according to my best friend Tony, who knows French very well.
Babelfish's exact translation is, well, wrong. :-)

The Merovingian's French line is, "Nom de Dieu de putain de bordel de merde
de saloperies de connards d'enculés de ta mère."


"Nom de Dieu"
"G** damn it"

"de putain de bordel de merde"
"nasty, filthy whores in shitty brothels"

"de saloperies de connards d'enculés de ta mère"
"taking it up the ass and jerking off"

So the Merovingian's English would have been something along the lines of,
"G** damn nasty, filthy whores in shitty brothels taking it up the ass and
jerking off."

The exact translation of the last part probably varies and could mean
"jerking [men] off", or it could just imply masturbating. Who knows?

Hey, you asked... Please correct me where I'm wrong!

Our French teacher never taught us swear words. :( That would have been so cool.

Oh, yeah, the "wiping your ass with silk" comment was EXTREMELY appropriate.

Um, I'm pretty sure that "Nom de Dieu" literally translates to "God's name". Somehow this doesn't seem to relate to the given translation, and I wonder how they came across it.

But hell, I'm not French. What do I know?

I'm going to monitor that thread. Several people with French friends are going to post what THEIR friends say. The one thing I've seen is that there are swear words in it that we don't even have an English translation for.

I'll keep ya updated. :)
